A ReBlog from The Collection Cup

Food Philosophy

Click to visit the original post Lately I’ve been pretty busy trying to keep everything together; fundraisers, clinical, studying, tests, presentations, process papers, patient care plans, trying to find time to sleep, eat, and take care of everything that comes after that.  I try to pour so much energy into the blogs that I posts, making sure that the information is accurate and interesting.  It usually takes me quite some of them together, which is why I haven’t had as many as I would like too.

YES! Keep it simple, sweetie. Life is busy, keep your head clear. You can still eat well. As I sit here pondering what 'simple' complex carbohydrate, packaged, processed food in a package that is in my pantry than I can whip up for lunch... what a bad example I am. But as you can see, I am working on getting better. Some days are better than others. Hopefully I will not succumb to what is in my cupboard (and doesn't look good anyway )and open up the refrigerator for some live foods.

Come ‘ere sugah… or not

I read this article in the NYTimes online assuming (because of its reputation), even though it’s an “Opinion” article, that I would learn something. Not to seem… Mr. Darcy-ish (that is, arrogant), but doesn’t everyone know sugar is a culprit? That sugar is the issue?

Admittedly, “everyone” is quite the general statement. Perhaps I should state the having read the article, instead of coming away feeling enlightened, I … wondered how this was a news flash. Oh, dear, this is coming across all wrong, I’m afraid. Do not many of us know (or know of) someone with diabetes, for example, who is not overweight? And so it stands to reason…

Without further ado, allow me to share the insights Mr. Mark Bittman (whom I sure you have heard of and enjoy, as well, generally) found in the study of the journal PLoS One…

Monsanto, Cheerios, and GMOs

Information on GMO’s is easy to find using any search engine you prefer. Just scan through the results for reputable-looking sites. There is a video called The Lies of GMO on YouTube that you might find interesting. Although, I can’t say for sure if it’s reputable! I saw the link on a site arguing against GMOs so no doubt it is biased, as most things are.

Personally, I have not conducted enough research to form a definitive opinion on the matter. I have heard enough nay-saying on GMO’s and GE’s, however, that I am leaning against it. This matter was brought to my attention this morning when I saw an ad for Cheerios, wanting readers to sponsor books for children. Sounds great. I read some of the comments, and to my surprise, they were all about Cheerios containing GMO’s, and how terrible it is. What a shock for me! I grew up eating these, and I have been feeding them to my son. Apparently they are not what they used to be.

There is an article called Cheerios: The Lies That General Mills Feeds Us that, again, may or may not be from a reliable source. Feel free to read it and let me know what you think.

I realize I am posting a lot of links, and the reason is because I am not qualified to give you any kind of opinion, much less suggestion, on this. Rather, I am seeking out your ideas, suggestions, advice. But I want it backed up by facts. I have had enough heresay. I am interested in cold, hard facts. Links to reputable resources and scientific evidence, either way.

Speaking of reputable, I think this resource, may be one(!): Why Grains and Glutens aren’t bad for you. And how about this one, assuming there is such a thing as a ‘healthy’ cereal (please say there is because I am a cereal nut!).

The problem is always, of course, that with online information, anyone, anywhere, can put up anything so there is no verifying credentials. If someone knows web development, they can make a website look legitimate.

I look forward to your input! Healthy eating and Happy Memorial Day!
