Monsanto, Cheerios, and GMOs

Information on GMO’s is easy to find using any search engine you prefer. Just scan through the results for reputable-looking sites. There is a video called The Lies of GMO on YouTube that you might find interesting. Although, I can’t say for sure if it’s reputable! I saw the link on a site arguing against GMOs so no doubt it is biased, as most things are.

Personally, I have not conducted enough research to form a definitive opinion on the matter. I have heard enough nay-saying on GMO’s and GE’s, however, that I am leaning against it. This matter was brought to my attention this morning when I saw an ad for Cheerios, wanting readers to sponsor books for children. Sounds great. I read some of the comments, and to my surprise, they were all about Cheerios containing GMO’s, and how terrible it is. What a shock for me! I grew up eating these, and I have been feeding them to my son. Apparently they are not what they used to be.

There is an article called Cheerios: The Lies That General Mills Feeds Us that, again, may or may not be from a reliable source. Feel free to read it and let me know what you think.

I realize I am posting a lot of links, and the reason is because I am not qualified to give you any kind of opinion, much less suggestion, on this. Rather, I am seeking out your ideas, suggestions, advice. But I want it backed up by facts. I have had enough heresay. I am interested in cold, hard facts. Links to reputable resources and scientific evidence, either way.

Speaking of reputable, I think this resource, may be one(!): Why Grains and Glutens aren’t bad for you. And how about this one, assuming there is such a thing as a ‘healthy’ cereal (please say there is because I am a cereal nut!).

The problem is always, of course, that with online information, anyone, anywhere, can put up anything so there is no verifying credentials. If someone knows web development, they can make a website look legitimate.

I look forward to your input! Healthy eating and Happy Memorial Day!

Eating Clean on a Budget

Eating clean, or avoiding processed foods, is a pretty hot topic lately. And of course every magazine in the grocery store lines has something shouting at you about health. Any media outlet you come across blares it into any of the 5 senses it can reach: the billboards and internet are as bad or worse than the magazine sitting quietly in their racks; the radio and television ads blare at you from the sound systems, sometimes unwanted background noise, simmering with ‘health’ news or commercials.

Information overload begins to weigh on your shoulders. A sudden urge comes to grab the nearest unhealthy snack. Teenage-like rebellion rears its ugly head and we figuratively close our eyes and ears to the ‘evil’ descending upon us, overwhelming us.

Sometimes eating clean, or healthy, just seems too difficult. Which choice is the ‘right’ choice? Is the right choice for you also the right choice for me? How do I know? Says who? And on top of all that… How can I afford it? Is it even expensive? Look at how cheap all of this processed food is. Not to mention how quick and easy it is to cook.

Am I reading your mind? Or that of someone you know?

The link to a blog article (and the blog itself!) might help. It is called:
Eating Clean on a College Budget: How to Cut Out Processed Foods…and Add Clean Foods into Your Diet.

Sometimes I still feel like I am on a college budget – oh, wait, I am! My husband went back to school… ha Well you may feel like you are still on a college budget, or maybe you are back to one, too! At any rate, we all have to budget our time, money and other resources. Not only does this blogger help make it seem easy to budget the money aspect of clean eating, but she also makes the whole IDEA of eating healthy seem easy, so wanted to share it with you!

Happy healthy and clean eating! By the way - she also posts a nice little grocery list of items that she 'always has on hand.'
